Herbert Diess replaces Matthias Müller as the new CEO of Volkswagen AG

Matthias Müller, CEO of the German car company Volkswagen AG, has resigned earlier today in favor of Herbert Diess, who’ll occupy the position as agreed upon by the Board of Directors. Müller has been criticized for failing to implement the company’s development strategy until 2025.

Among other things, Volkswagen AG was expected to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of environmentally-friendly vehicles by that year. The leadership of the company found that these plans were given insufficient attention with Matthias Müller at the head of management.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that Matthias Müller took up the driving seat of Volkswagen when the company was caught in the midst of a serious fraud scandal. The car manufacturer was accused of manipulating emission test results to present the new vehicles as being far cleaner than they actually were. Following the numerous court proceeding that arose in different countries after the scandal, the company was charged around $90 million in fines.
