Volkswagen AG has held an official presentation ceremony centered on its all-new electric racecar prototype called the I.D. R Pikes Peak. The manufacturer hopes its entry is strong enough to beat the current Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record time of 8:57.118.
To that end, the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak comes equipped with two electric motors together capable of 680 hp. They accelerate the vehicle to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.25 seconds, which is already better than any of the Formula One entries can do. The car also weighs as little as 1,100 kilograms (2,425 lbs.).
The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak will be piloted by Romain Dumas, twice winner of the 24 Hours Le Mans, during the race which starts on June 24, 2018.
