Volkswagen AG introduces three new engines

The German automotive giant Volkswagen AG has held a presentation of three new car engines during a dedicated event in Wien, Austria. The engine palette was supplemented by two new hybrid units and a CNG turbo engine.

The manufacturer hopes to reduce the total amount of harmful emissions produced by its vehicles and hopefully restore its reputation that suffered quite a bit following the so-called ‘Dieselgate’ scandal.

The first entry is a moderately-performing 48V hybrid engine meant to assist the driver with rapid acceleration. It can also help conserve some fuel while coasting by switching the gasoline unit off altogether. Volkswagen Golf VIII will be the first to get this new motor.

Another one is a 1.5 TGI Evo turbo engine which can operate on compressed natural gas or synthetic gas. Depending on the modification, it ships either with a turbocharger or a direct injection system. With 130 hp (97 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb·ft) of torque at its disposal, it can take a car as far as 500 kilometers (310 miles) when full.

Finally, there is a diesel-electric hybrid called EA288 Evo. It encompasses a 2.0-liter diesel engine, a 12V starter-generator and a lithium-ion battery set. Its summary performance may vary between 130 and 200 hp (97 and 150 kW), once again depending on the modification. This one will be only installed on Audi cars.
