Volkswagen I.D. hatchback to keep its original design

Head of VW Design Klaus Bischoff said that the exterior design of the all-new Volkswagen I.D. EV would be almost completely identical to that of its prototype version the company showed two years ago in Paris.

Wheel size, dimensions and overall stylistics will remain unchanged in the series. Power-assisted door handles and rear view cameras in place of side mirrors are going to be the only two things that will not make it into production. This was partially agreed upon because of price concerns, and because of some limitations imposed by the legislation.

The concept hatchback came equipped with a single electric motor rated at 169 hp (126 kW). It could accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8 seconds and had a driving range estimated between 400 and 600 km (approx. 250 – 375 mi). This is likely what the production vehicle will ship with, but the manufacturer has not confirmed it explicitly yet.

The car is already running through some of the initial tests and should reach the main street-testing phase in the fall of 2018. Production will begin in November 2019 at the earliest, with the sales scheduled for 2020.

Prices remain a mystery so far, but Bischoff let it slip that the vehicle would be priced within the VW diesel car range.
