Volkswagen reveals first photos of its Tharu compact SUV

Following a teaser announcement, Volkswagen AG has revealed the first official photos featuring an all-new compact crossover vehicle named Tharu, which will first enter the market in China and eventually expand to other markets as well.

Based on the photos, the upcoming Volkswagen Tharu won’t be much different from the Powerful Family SUV Concept at all (the latter debuted at the last year’s Beijing Automotive Exhibition). From the technical point of view, the car closely approaches Skoda Karoq that also uses the MQB platform.

Given the extremely low popularity of AWD cars in that country, the China-only Tharu is going to be strictly front-driven. The manufacturer reports that it is going to ship with a variety of turbo engines rated between 116 and 150 hp (87 – 112 kW). Transmission choices will include manual and 7-speed DSG. Other markets may or may not get similar specs, and we won’t know until closer to launch date.

In terms of features, the car will offer an all-around view camera system, LED lighting, a panorama roof and a number of other nice things. Apart of China, the vehicle will be sold in the countries where the VW T-Roc is unavailable, e.g. Mexico, Argentina, Russia etc.
