Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak final design revealed

Apparently, the Volkswagen team doesn’t give up on the intention to set a new record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, USA. Its engineers have built a unique, ultra-tough, all-electric vehicle they called the I.D. R Pikes Peak.

The team has worked night and day to design and perfect the aerodynamic body kit, and has put a colossal effort in into the project. Now we may finally see the result of their labor.

The latest official video shows the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak climbing the namesake mountain trail piloted by French racing driver Romain Dumas. The grey EV bears the number “94” and packs an electric motor duo which produces up to 670 hp / 500 kW. The traction battery is split between the left and the right side of the cockpit for more even weight distribution.

The vehicle also supports regenerative braking, weighs only 1,100 kg with the driver already inside, and takes 2.2 seconds to accelerate 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph).

The Race to the Clouds will commence on June 24, 2018. Romain Dumas aspires to set a new worldwide high score in the All-Electric Vehicles category. In order to accomplish that, he would have to ascend the 20-kilometer (12.42-mile) long track to the very pinnacle in less than 8 minutes 57.1 seconds.
