Jost Capito, head of Volkswagen R, has admitted that he and his colleagues entertained the idea of releasing a hi-end all-electric vehicle based on a Volkswagen I.D. hatchback or crossover.
“If we get down to work on an R model, we’ll have to make sure it turns out a full-fledged R model, otherwise our efforts would be in vain,” he said.
He refused to provide any release date estimations, arguing that the EV-related technologies are developing too fast right now. The company isn’t even sure which chassis to choose as the base for the new vehicle, since it has to answer the question of “What’s the intended target audience?” first.
Industry professionals tend to agree that Volkswagen started thinking about releasing a street-legal EV after the spectacular victory of its I.D. R Concept sport car at the Pikes Peak.
