The new Amarok pickup co-designed between Ford and Volkswagen uses a Ford Power Stroke V6 instead of the model’s usual TDI engine. Is it for the better or worse? Time will tell, but if you would like a quick answer, watch this video by CarExpert.
The video compares the acceleration dynamics of the old-gen VW Amarok with that of the latest Ford Ranger. In its stock guise, the Amarok makes 258 PS (254 hp / 190 kW) and 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque. Importantly, you can activate a special boost mode to get 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) over a brief period.
The new ranger also makes use of a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, and that mill produces a comparable 250 PS (246 hp / 184 kW) and 600 Nm (369 lb-ft). On the downside, it lacks a boost mode of any kind.
The video provides a clear answer to which of the trucks is superior on the drag strip and whether it was worth it for the German pickup to switch to North American internals.
