Cinchona-made VW Beetle takes the road from Peru to the USA

Bienvenido Ortega, a talented carpenter from Peru, has built a wooden Volkswagen Beetle. Pay attention here, please: this isn’t yet another museum exhibit, but rather an actual, fully functional car! In fact, its creator is currently on a road trip to New York, USA, to hand it over to his daughter, Ms. Eneli Ortega.

Apparently, two years ago Eneli persuaded her father to build a wooden car for her as a birthday gift. She also asked him to drive it all the way to New York and hand it over personally.

Bienvenido built his first ride based on an old Chevrolet chassis, but the car broke down in Columbia. He took some time trying to fix it, but had to abandon the project due to his visa expiring. He ended up leaving the problematic ride with his friends and go home.

He was successful on his second attempt, however, sourcing an engine and a chassis from two different Volkswagen Beetles and restoring them to top condition. He made the car body out of cinchona wood, styling it after 1960s-era American vehicles.

Ortega could only work on his project on weekends, so completing it took as long as nine months.

The loving father is currently underway to New York. He plans to get there by July, arriving in time for Eneli’s 17th birthday.
