VW has posted a somewhat sad and melancholic video dedicated to the permanent discontinuation of its Beetle best-seller series.
The company teamed up with New York-based advertisement agency Johannes Leonardo to produce the animated video called The Last Mile. It follows a man though his principal life stages and always features the iconic compact car in the backdrop. Accompanied by the song Let It Be by the Beatles, the protagonist grows up, creates a family and eventually grows old. He observes that the world around has changed dramatically, with ICE cars being increasingly replaced by EVs. But the story continues, and where one path ends, another one begins.
The Volkswagen Beetle belongs to the Hall of Fame of the automotive industry as a whole. The original Beetle emerged all the way back in 1938 and has stayed in production until 2003. In 1998, another generation came out with the drive on the front axle. In 2012, the company tried to relaunch Beetle on the Jetta sedan platform, but stopped the attempts in 2018, taking it out of production.
