A highly unusual prototype car named the Volkswagen 1600 Project 1021 is currently up for sale in the small town of Knysna, South Africa. Let’s see what you get for 50,000 rand, or around $3,500 USD.
A local division of Volkswagen crafted the SUV based on an early-generation Juke chassis (see video). C-pillar air intakes and the fuel tank lid on a front fender both indicate that the engine resides at the rear end, and the radiator grille at the front is obviously fake.
We don’t know if the car has AWD, but evidence suggests the opposite. The Juke first shipped with a 1.6-liter, 58-hp naturally aspirated engine in South Africa in 1972, and the Project 1021 was built five years later.
Another thing that remains uncertain is how many units were assembled. At least one chassis was used for a two-seat pickup truck. Note also that the example on sale has one door on the right and two doors on the left.
The seller claims that the car is in good driving condition, road-legal and ready to go.
