Tuning aficionados aren’t always rich people, as Matt’s example clearly shows. In fact, the man’s financial problems is what led him to creating one of the world’s craziest Beetle Frankencars.
Apparently, Matt rented a garage a while ago and had to move out quickly when he ran out of rental money. He had a spare Volkswagen Beetle body lying around there, so he procured a BMW E36 chassis just to transport it out of the garage. He was surprised how well the parts aligned with each other, though, and decided to see whether he could build something road-worthy out of them.
The project has taken six years of work so far and saw the car’s bodywork restored using panels from several different Beetles, an M3 diff lock installed for torque control, and the drivetrain (engine plus transmission) swapped out for that of a Nissan GT-R. It is not complete yet, but it is already a car that looks like a rusty rat, weighs in at just one metric ton (2,200 lbs), and packs 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW) at the rear wheels.
