Have a look at a rare VW Beetle-based van for sale

We are told that the Automecca Sportsvan exists in 17 units worldwide, and this example with around 5,000 miles (8,000 km) on the clock is up for sale, although you will need to prove your interest to learn the price.

In the early 1970s, Curtis Brubaker contacted Volkswagen with a business offer he thought was cool: to build custom minivans on the Beetle platform. The company wasn’t interested, so he started acquiring old Beetles and building Brubaker Box vans out of them. To his surprise, no one cared about them.

Brubaker’s business went bankrupt in 1972, but sponsors felt like trying again. They contacted Automecca with an offer to continue making the car. As a result, around 25 Sportsvans were made in total, out of which 17 are said to have survived to this day.

The coachbuilt Beetle has a glass-fiber plastic body with certain structural and cabin modifications. For instance, the fuel tank and the pedal unit have been displaced and a new rear bench installed. A single sliding door on the right was used to access both the driver’s seat and the rear sofa.

The ad fails to mention what engine the example on sale has.
