Herbert Diess: VW to revive the Beetle, design a new pickup EV

Volkswagen has not given up on the idea to make a battery pickup truck and to resurrect the iconic Beetle mode, VW Group CEO Herbert Diess said during his recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. He also confirmed that new electric cars were coming soon, including an affordable hatchback and a large sedan.

Next up on the release schedule is the ID. Buzz van, which is due to debut next month. Diess called it ‘an icon’ and ‘the most emotional’ Volkswagen vehicle.

Speaking about the Beetle revival, he pointed out that the MEB architecture used by the company today enables designing other ‘emotional’ vehicles. This could be interpreted as a hint that the model may come back to us sometime.

He also answered positively when asked about whether the company was interested in making a pickup truck to compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning in the United States. diess pointed out the Tarok Concept featured in our gallery and the video here, but did not reveal any further details.

In 2023, the company intends to reveal a production version of the ID.Vizzion Concept, an eco-friendly alternative to the Passat. More EVs with traditional car styles are also in development under Audi and Bentley brands. As for the convertible based on the ID.3 hatchback, the idea has been shelved for now.

Finally, VW Group plans to launch wallet-friendly electric cars priced from under €20,000. The mass-market version of the ID.Life Concept should become the first such model when it reaches the showrooms in 2025.
