Meet the WorldStar, an ultra-rare VW Beetle pickup conversion

An interesting ad has cropped up on Craigslist. The seller argues that there are precious few WorldStar pickup trucks in existence and asks $15,000 for the Volkswagen Beetle-based car with less than 20,000 km (12,500 miles) under its belt.

According to reports that are difficult to confirm, a company named World Transport Authority planned to mass-produce such mini-trucks for Africa and South America markets. It had even negotiated with Yugoslavian automaker Zastava in an attempt to secure part shipments, but ultimately reckoned that the VW Beetle would be easier to work with.

It is unknown how many units saw the daylight before the production stopped. The WorldStar pickup on sale sources its power from a 1.6-liter flat-four engine and drives the wheels through the four-speed manual transmission that came standard with the 1974 Beetle. Only the front wheels are driven. Cabin heating and power steering are not provided for in the base design.
