Peek inside Stephen Hawking’s Volkswagen Caravelle

The minivan that once belonged to famous British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking will go on sale on August 27, 2022 without any price estimates. It is a 34-year-old Volkswagen Caravelle that has been retrofitted for wheelchair use and has served Hawking for more than 10 years, notably as his wedding car back in 1995.

The third generation used to be produced in Germany, Austria and South Africa in 1979–2002. The engine range was extensive and consisted of petrol and diesel engines ranging between 1.6 and 2.6 liters of displacement, mated to four- and five-speed manual transmissions as well as a three-speed auto gearbox. Buyers could choose between RWD and AWD.

The example on sale switches its own gears to trivialize driving for any nurses or attendants who may need it. It also features an access ramp enabling the scientist to get in and out without incident. Additional securing points are provided to keep the wheelchair stable and safe during rides.

Due to the gradual worsening of his motor neuron disease, Stephen Hawking was forced to abandon his regular wheelchair for a larger and more complex one that no longer fitted into the VW Caravelle. He handed the minivan over to his nephew, who proceeded to use it for many years.
