Volkswagen AG has taken the wraps off a special version of its Crafter van designed for anti-riot police operations. The car comes equipped with a detention cell, equipment lockers and shatterproof glass.
The windshield, in particular, is composed of a special plastic substance that withstands virtually all kinds of impacts. The side windows are similarly protected and tinted. Owing to the use of innovative materials and the lack of a secondary metal frame, the car weighs less than usual and provides a wide, unrestricted field of view from the cabin.
The Volkswagen Crafter police van also features a siren, flashing lights, and a lockable cell for rioters. It comes powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine capable of 177 hp (132 kW).
