The eighth generation of the iconic Volkswagen Golf is right around the corner, and we have already seen it without the test mule mascara, anyway. However, nothing has been revealed about its specs until now.
Many believed that the Dieselgate scandal would prompt Volkswagen Group to abandon its diesel lineup completely. As it turns out, the Golf Mk8 will still be bringing a few diesel options to the table.
The company claims it has developed a new emission control technology that it calls ‘SCR’. In the SCR system, carbamide is used in two areas of the exhaust tract: in the catalytic converter that processes the gases just as they leave the ignition chamber, and at the exhaust tips, where gases can reach temperatures up to 900 degrees Celsius (1,650 ºF).
A similar tech is currently implemented in the 2.0 TDI Evo engine of the VW Passat. The new Golf, however, promises an 80% or greater reduction in nitrous oxide emissions compared to the Passat.
This is the first official bit of technical information about the upcoming Golf generation. If it proves as impressive as it sounds, the engine may become a best-seller in Europe.
