Volkswagen AG has officially confirmed that the eighth generation of its Golf hatchback will celebrate international premiere in Wolfsburg, Germany on October 24, 2019. The production has already started.
The company had originally planned to unveil the Golf at the Frankfurt show, but ended up delaying it for several reasons. First, it wanted to focus everyone’s attention on its first-ever all-electric vehicle, the ID.3. Second, it had to resolve issues with the over-the-air infotainment system updates.
The new Golf comes based on the same MQB platform as its predecessor, but drops the three-door version from production permanently. Engines remain unannounced, but chances are good that there will be a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder TSI, a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder TSI with partial cylinder deactivation, a 1.6L TDI and a 2.0L TDI. The Golf R (depicted on the video here) will arrive a bit later packing around 300 hp (224 kW) under the hood.
