Packing 290 hp (216 kW) in its factory shape, the VW Golf GTI TCR may not be the hottest hatch in history, but it is still well equipped as road-legal vehicles go. Nonetheless, German tuner MTM Motoren Technik GmbH has found a thing or two to improve.
In fact, the company is currently offering four boost kits for the third generation of the EA888 four-cylinder engine. As per the usual, the Stage I boils down to a straightforward ECU remap and yields 350 hp (258 kW). The Stages 2 through 4 promise 381, 433, and finally even 480 hp (284, 323, and 358 kW, respectively).
The Stage 4 involves major transmission upgrades, turbocharger replacement, reinforcement of engine housing, installation of a new downpipe with a metallic catalyst, addition of a high-pressure fuel pump, and much more. Top that off with MTM’s in-house-designed intercooler, and you will be looking at a nearly €15,000 bill.
According to MTM Motoren Technik, the upgrade does not disturb the workings of the electronic engine check system that comes with the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.
