Read on for an overview of the year as seen by Volkswagen AG, including sales numbers and launch schedules for new ICE and electrified cars.
A month ago, Volkswagen’s 250,000th all-electric car rolled off the assembly line. It was an e-Golf hatchback, one of the approximately 104,000 units sold over the past five years. The VW e-up! supermini ranked a distant second with just above 21,000 units. The Golf GTE has sold 51,000 units in the same period, becoming the marque’s best-selling hybrid.
In 2020, VW plans to launch the ID.3 hatchback and subsequently remove the e-Golf from production. Further plans for the year include the production start of its first battery SUV series, currently known as the ‘ID.4’ (name subject to change). The car debuted in the form of the ID Crozz Concept two years ago (see the video for more) and has since appeared at two motor shows (both times wrapped in camo).
VW plans to produce the ID.4 at the same factory as the ID.3 located in Zwickau, Germany. Later on, the model will become available in North America and China.
The company expects to have sold at least 1,000,000 fully electric VW-branded cars by the end of 2023. It is worth noting that the original plans had that goal set for the end of 2025, but the ID.3 turned out massively popular and brought in plenty of pre-orders. The way things are going now, VW expects up to 1,500,000 EV sales by the end of 2025.
