Volkswagen Golf R leaks in spy images

The standard-issue VW Golf Mk8 debuted late last year, but this does not make waiting for its numerous upcoming specs and versions any less exciting. This specimen in particular is interesting because it looks like the eighth-gen Golf R.

There are multiple details that seem to hint that we are dealing with the top-performance R spec here. First, the hatchback has quad exhaust pipes grouped by two. Second, large wheels provide a glimpse onto performance brakes with their blue calipers. Third, the front end looks not stock Golf Mk8. Last but not least, the rear wheels kick up snow, betraying the AWD system that only the new Golf R is getting.

Industry observers expect the hot hatch to pack around 333 hp (250 kW) of power, but a special edition might as well emerge with 400 hp (300 kW) or more under the hood. The transmission is going to be dual-clutch semi-automatic, and the AWD is something we’ve already mentioned.

The Volkswagen Golf R is slated for reveal at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Great Britain this summer. The mid-range Golf GTI will debut much sooner at the Geneva IMS on March 3, 2020.
