It has been a while since we saw an engine swap as brutal as this one! This third-gen Golf GTi from the 1990s era may look meek, but it packs 7x the original power and eats supercars for breakfast.
The hot hatch had its original 115-hp (86-kW) engine unmounted and the new 2.5-liter, five-cylinder Volvo S60 mill put in its place. It also received the Volvo M58 transmission and the Audi 4Motion AWD.
As impressive as the above points may sound, the story doesn’t quite end there and then. The Volvo engine received a huge turbocharger and ended up with 720 horsepower (537 kilowatts) at the crank. Boosted like this, the sleeper car zapped through the quarter-mile strip of the Santa Pod Raceway in barely above nine seconds.
Fueled with E85, the Golf GTi reaches as high as 825 hp (615 kW) and hits 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in under three seconds. Watch the video, you cannot afford to miss out on this.
