Even as wagons yield to SUVs and performance family cars become exotics, Volkswagen remains true to its cause. The upcoming Golf R Variant has recently been spotted not far from the famed North Loop of the Nürburgring.
The car was virtually camo-free except for the concealed R badging and the disguised lower bumper. No cabin shots were made, and while you can still see Recaro seats along with a roll cage inside, these are needed strictly for testing purposes and will not be present in the final version of the car. Other than that, the estate looks like its hatchback sibling.
The Variant is expected to ship with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 315 PS (311 hp / 232 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft), a seven-speed DSG, and an AWD system. Since the hot hatch completes its initial sprint in 4.7 seconds, the wagon might be able to do the same in under five seconds, too.
The reveal date should be announced soon, so stay tuned.
