You can either buy this 1989 Volkswagen Golf or a new Mercedes S-Class

This 33-year-old Volkswagen Golf is available in Great Britain with 109,000 km (~67,700 miles) under its belt and an asking price just under £80,000. You could add £3,000 and get a new Mercedes-Benz S-Class instead, but this Golf is a true rarity.

Specifically, it is a G60 Limited spec (see video) that came to the market with an all-wheel-drive system and a rather powerful engine compared to other Golfs of its era. Only 71 units rolled off the assembly lines in total.

Back in the late 1880s, one of the top-spec Golfs was called Rallye. It took advantage of Syncro AWD, had 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW) and sported a number of exterior enhancements, including a special body kit with boxy wheel arches.

Volkswagen Motorsport did not stop there and then and instead produced another, even faster variant of the Rallye, making it a sleeper this time around. The car looked completely mundane except for a special plate on the front bumper and VW Motorsport-tinted wheel inserts. The owner of the example on sale decided it felt too plain, so they replaced the wheels with a set of multi-spoke BBS rims. The interior with a couple of sport seats received a makeover in Nappa leather.

Like the Golf Rallye and the Corrado, this Golf comes powered by a 1.8-liter turbo, but the engine benefits from having 16 valves instead of 8 and runs on higher induction pressure. This lets it pump out 210 PS (207 hp / 154 kW) to the wheels instead of 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW). Its suspension and five-speed manual transmission originate from the genuine Golf rally racer of that era.

The seller points out that the car was the fastest Volkswagen on the market when it premiered, sprinting 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) in mere 6.8 seconds and maxing out at 225 km/h (140 mph).
