Reports: VW Golf EV may keep GTI and R versions alive

The upcoming facelift of the Volkswagen Golf will be the last update in store for the gas-powered hatchback: the ninth generation that will follow will be completely electric. However, even that one will still have GTI and R versions, rumors claim.

Reports are trickling in that the Golf IX is scheduled for release in 2028 or so based on the SSP platform co-developed between Audi and Porsche. An 800V architecture, ultra-fast charging and state-of-the-art electronic aids including a Level 4 autopilot, should make it Volkswagen’s most technologically advanced battery car to date.

At the same time, the automaker admitted it was looking to cut mass production costs with the new platform. Preliminary estimations show that the all-electric Golf will be priced closer to its gas-powered predecessor than the MEB-based VW ID.3.

Rumors also say that the electric Golf R will likely be the only all-wheel-drive hatchback in the lineup, while the GTI and all other versions will make do with a single electric motor. Granted, none of this is official yet.
