The German car manufacturer Volkswagen AG has unveiled the high-end Golf GTI TCR, the fastest-going sports car in the series which can now get rid of the electronically-imposed hard speed limit.
The vehicle premiered at a recent GTI fan meeting in Austria. Visitors could see it up close and even lift the hood cover to look at what was inside. Apparently, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine good for 290 hp (216 kW) and up to 370 Nm (273 lb·ft) of torque, the latter attained as early as 1,600 RPM. To compare, junior models come with engines rated between 230 and 245 hp (172 – 183 kW).
This time around, the engineers outfitted the car with a seven-speed DCT box and a front-axle diff lock. Its top going speed with the limit on equals 250 km/h (155 mph) and rises to 264 km/h (164 mph) otherwise.
The newcomer has displaced the 310 hp (231 kW) strong Clubsport S as the strongest vehicle in the Golf GTI lineup. A total of 400 Clubsport S have been sold since the release.
