Volkswagen North America is in a festive mood, blowing the 40th candle on the Golf GTI birthday cake. To remind us of the German carmaker’s first hot hatch in the United States – the Rabbit GTI that hit the showrooms in 1983 – the company will be releasing a 40th Anniversary Edition.
The base car is a Golf GTI S. Buyers can choose from two exclusive exterior finishes including Tornado Red and Urano Grey, as well as two standard ones – Pomelo Yellow Metallic and Opal White Pearl.
The car rides on 19-inch multi-spoke wheels finished in gloss-black. If the alloy rims strike you as familiar, that’s because they are identical to those the Golf GTI Clubsport 45 wore when it debuted in Europe last year.
From the outside, you can recognize the Golf GTI 40th Anniversary Edition by its honeycomb ornaments on the sides along with the number 40, as well as contrasting black roof and side mirrors. The main cabin highlight is the number 40 on the bottom steering wheel spoke.
Prices start from U.S. $33,055.
