Volkswagen Golf R wagon debuts on official terms

Volkswagen has introduced the more practical estate car version of the Golf R, complete with an elongated roof and added trunk space. Let us delve into the details.

The trunk size varies between 611 and 1,642 liters (21.6 – 58 cubic feet, respectively) depending on whether you have folded down the rear seats. In case this is still insufficient somehow, roof rails are provided for some extra carrying capacity.

The powertrain is the same as the hatchback version’s. A two-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine produces 320 PS (316 hp / 235 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque, making the car the most powerful VW-branded wagon ever made. The 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) discipline is done in 4.9 seconds, and while the top speed lies at 250 km/h (155 mph), you can opt for a speed limiter lift to 270 km/h (167 mph).

A seven-speed DCT sends the momentum to an AWD system with electronic locks and torque vectoring. Adaptive shocks are used throughout, and sports-grade suspension springs drop the ride height by 20 mm (0.8”).

Features inside include a digital dashboard, sports steering wheel and seats, a 10-inch infotainment system, a 3-zone HVAC system, and a whole range of electronic driving aids.

Sales start next month with prices to be announced later (but don’t expect less than €50,000).
