Volkswagen rushes R&D, says quality won’t be affected

Volkswagen AG plans to accelerate the development cycles of new cars, ultimately reducing to just 36 months what normally took the corporation 54 months to complete. Apparently, the carmaker is desperate to stay competitive as China keeps conquering the market.

The corresponding report comes from Autocar. Starting with the Volkswagen ID. 2all (in the gallery and the video here), the German automotive giant plans to switch to a shortened 36-month development cycle. The design team submitted sketches of a compact EV in late 2022, so the production of the ID. 2all should begin in late 2025 according to the new schedule.

Speaking with Autocar, VW Head for Technical Development admitted that accelerating production processes carries inherent risks, but the company has all the necessary tools not only to mitigate them, but even to improve the quality across the board. To that end, VW is currently developing new quality assurance methods and looking for ways to minimize the required road testing cycles.
