Volkswagen to design an ID.3 SUV, a couple of affordable EVs

Volkswagen will be introducing a new crossover SUV based on the ID.3 along with two other electric cars priced under €25,000, CEO Thomas Schäfer said in an interview. The company is also going to develop an all-new EV platform to phase out the MEB architecture.

The VW ID.4 is the marque’s smallest battery-powered SUV on the market right now. Later on, however, a smaller alternative will appear based on the ID.3 chassis (shown in our gallery and the video here). Compact electric SUVs are highly popular these days, and we would be surprised if VW didn’t want to get its slice of the pie, too.

In earlier news, the automaker announced an affordable EV priced between U.S. $20,000 and $25,000. Schäfer has now confirmed that two such cars would be coming to the market before 2026, an urban hatchback and a sporty crossover SUV. They will be positioned in the same segments as the latest Polo and T-Cross.

All in all, the automotive giant plans to design up to ten new EVs, but this estimate includes new versions of existing cars, too. The company promises to introduce electric transports in all major segments of the market. By the end of the decade, the MEB architecture underpinning all electric cars of today will be phased out and a new one called SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) will be adopted. The SSP will then be used as a universal basis for all mass-produced cars.
