Volkswagen ID.4 bows out of production

The production of the all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 crossover in Tennessee, United States is about to wrap up in a few days, Motor1.com reports quoting sources inside the company. A successor is likely to appear at a later date, but it may no longer be called “ID.4”.

According to the publication, the company claims it needed extra production capacities for the facelifted Atlas. This sounds plausible, but there’s no avoiding the fact that the ID.4 has been failing to connect with buyers in North America recently. In 2025, Volkswagen moved barely more than 22,000 examples of the electric SUV, whereas the pre-facelift Atlas enjoyed 70,000+ sales over the same period. That’s not a good look for the ID.4.

In an earlier announcement, Volkswagen revealed an intention to ditch its current confusing naming scheme in favor of more “human-sounding” names. Based on what we’ve heard so far, the successor to the ID.4 lineup will most likely be called “ID.Tiguan”. That being said, the details aren’t in just yet.
