Volkswagen has officially started the assembly lines of its coupe-like SUVs ID.5 and ID.5 GTX.
The marque’s third all-electric production car debuted last fall with a more sloped roof compared to the ID.4 and a body 17 mm (0.7 inches) longer. Other than that, the two are virtually identical, although the manufacturer likes to highlight the ID.5 as a “sportier and more elegant” alternative to the ID.4. Due to this upmarket positioning, the ID.5 will not be available with the smaller 52-kWh traction battery that the ID.4 “Pure” spec uses.
Customers will be able to choose between three specifications. Pro comes with a single rear-axle motor rated at 174 PS (172 hp / 128 kW) and a battery storing 77 kWh of power. It can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 10.4 seconds and maxes out at 160 km/h (99 mph).
Adding a package called Performance ramps up the power to 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and reduces the sprint time to 8.4 seconds. The top speed stays the same, as does the WLTP-rated range of 521 kilometers (323 miles).
The ID.5 GTX is the sportiest of the bunch with its dual motors and 299 PS (295 hp / 220 kW) at its disposal. It needs 6.3 seconds to launch to a highway speed and can reach 180 km/h (112 mph). Weighing in at 2,242 kg (4,943 lbs), it has a slightly smaller range of 491 km (305 miles). Both single-motor specs weigh around 100 kg (200 lbs) less than that.
