The APP550 is an electric motor designed to be mounted on the rear axle and deliver more power and torque while consuming less electricity than its predecessors. Some of the VW ID cars will start shipping with it by the end of the year.
The motor is built for the MEB platform used in all ID-family electric vehicles and therefore is subject to the size and weight limitations imposed by it. It produces 286 PS (282 hp / 210 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.
Unlike the previous designs, the APP550 has a higher stator coil loop count and takes advantage of a stronger permanent magnet of the rotor. The invertor and liquid cooling have also been reworked. As a result, despite its superior output, the unit consumes less power and extends the range of the car it is installed in.
It is expected that the Volkswagen ID.7 (shown here) will be the first ID car to start shipping with it. We will see the unit live at the Shanghai Auto Show on Tuesday, April 18. It looks like China could be the first to get the APP550, but at the moment, the ID.7 has only been registered in the country with a much weaker old e-motor making 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW).
