Electric VW Passat successor goes on sale in China

The battery-powered Volkswagen ID.7 is coming to phase out the old Passat sedan in China. Co-produced between FAW and Volkswagen, it will be sold on that country’s market under the name ‘ID.7 Vizzion’ and start from 237,700 Yuan, CarNewsChina reports.

The news is surprising because the starting price translates into a low €30,400. For comparison, the base ID.7 model in Europe starts from €56,995 before options. Furthermore, the Chinese version is the only one that has a dual-motor option.

For the time being, the ID.7 Vizzion will be sold with a single e-motor on the rear axle making 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. An 84.8-kWh battery will give it up to 642 km (399 miles) of driving range.

Later on, an all-wheel-drive variant will go on sale with an extra 109-PS (108-hp / 80-kW) motor on the front axle and the same battery. Due to the higher power consumption, this version will run out of battery juice after 570 km (354 miles). Its price has not been announced yet.

The base trim includes Matrix LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof blocking 99% of all UV radiation, a smart climate control system aware of the position of the sun in the sky, and an infotainment system with a 15-inch display. A heads-up display will also be available, as well as a wide range of electronic driving assists.

When it reaches the market, the VW ID.7 Vizzion will mainly compete against the BYD Han and the Tesla Model 3, local media say.
