Volkswagen AG plans to produce and ship more than 40,000 units of the all-electric ID. Buzz van to a number of countries worldwide. Despite the relatively narrow target audience and the fact that the model is barely known at this point, the company expects it to be a major hit among buyers. German tuner ABT Sportsline seems to agree, as the company is already designing solar panels for it.
The first version of the upgrade will be compatible exclusively with the long-wheelbase version of the ID. Buzz, since it has the most roof space. Another variant might reach production later with side elements added for extra efficiency.
Under ideal conditions, the standard solar array will be able to generate up to 600W of power, which translates into roughly 3,000 km (1,860 miles) of free driving per year. Adding the side modules will raise the generation to 1,000W – once again, in theory and under optimal weather conditions.
In addition to recharging the main battery, the panels will be useful for supplying power to other equipment on board – lighting, audio speakers, a refrigerator and the like.
The prices remain secret. ABT hopes to begin deliveries in early 2024 and is conducting talks with Volkswagen to allow panel installation straight in the factory – doing so should slash costs considerably.
