The new generation of the Volkswagen Jetta GLI sedan has enjoyed its official premiere at the ongoing 2019 Chicago Auto Show. Here is what we learned.
The next generation comes powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as the U.S.-sold Golf GTI hatchback. It outputs up to 230 hp (172 kW) and can work with either a six-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission.
Compared to the regular Jetta, the GLI trim sports multi-link rear suspension, better shock absorbers and springs. This enables it to ride 15 mm (0.56”) lower than the non-GLI version. It also features Golf R performance brakes.
On the outside, you can easily tell the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI from its predecessor by a different radiator grille with a red stripe running across it, revised bumpers, 18-inch wheel rims, dual end pipes and a trunk spoiler.
The interior of the car now houses improved seats with lateral support. Available options include leather upholstery, all-digital instrument panel, panoramic glass roof and ventilated front seats.
Sales in the USA begin this spring. Prices will be available later.
