Apparently, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen wants its name written into the annals of history as the producer of the fastest-going vehicles, among other things.
The company has ordered a special modification of VW Jetta to be made by THR Manufacturing. The engineers have lowered its road clearance, installed new, well-rounded wheels clad in sport tires, and added a self-locking differential.
They have also removed the stock 1.4L turbo engine and replaced it with the 2.0L EA888 unit – the same one the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta GLI sport car series will ship with. In its series version, the new engine is 550 hp / 410 kW strong and works in conjunction with a manual transmission. The particular engine of the record-challenging VW Jetta will likely be boosted to a higher level of performance – after all, the vehicle will have to accelerate past 335 km/h (208 mph) on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA.
Other additions include a roll cage, a fire extinguisher, two drag parachutes, and a racing seat with heavy-duty safety belts.
The modded Volkswagen Jetta will attempt to set a new speed record on August 11 – 17, 2018.
