Have a laugh at this silly VW-based Porsche 917 replica

A rather offbeat imitation of the Porsche 917 based on the 1968 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe is up for bidding right now, with a few days on the clock and a $2,917 top offer.

Back in the late 1970s, Elite Enterprises manufactured a custom glass-fiber body for this VW. The 917 was clearly the main inspiration, but it came out wildly distorted and exaggerated in all the wrong places.

The interior is also custom with a new steering wheel, sport seats and a Power Acoustik multimedia system added later. The main downside is, it looks nothing like the cockpit of the original Porsche.

The car keeps its VW flat-four, but benefits from a displacement upgrade from 1.6 to more than 1.8 liters. A four-speed manual transmission carries the torque to the rear wheels.

With 3,620 miles (5,826 kilometers) on the counter, the car looks barely used, and the owner claims he only drove it for 50 miles (80 km). As is often the case with such projects, however, true mileage may differ. The description mentions minor body finish defects and slightly misaligned doors.
