Report: Volkswagen Passat sedan retires in Europe

According to Autocar.co.uk, the writing is on the wall for the Passat sedan, one of Volkswagen’s longest-living production cars. Two reasons are cited for discontinuing it for good.

One is that the wagon-shaped Passat outsells it by a wide margin. The other one is that the newer Arteon model makes the Passat sedan redundant. As for the date when it might leave production, no specific timelines are provided. By all indications, it could happen in 2023.

The four-door car has recently been de-listed from sale on a number of websites in Europe. Its estate counterpart will be going into its next generation in 2023 to make use of the MEB platform and other technological upgrades. If the reports are accurate, the saloon will never see the next generation.

Getting rid of the aged model will pave the way for Volkswagen’s newest EV, which temporarily goes by the name ‘Aero B’. It is already in development with the ID. Space Vizzion Concept as the main source of inspiration.
