Brazil-made VW New Urban Coupe spotted again

The affordable coupe-shaped crossover/SUV has been designed in Brazil and is currently running its pre-production tests. We have seen both spy photos and official sketches before, and today, a new pic cropped up yet again.

The New Urban Coupe still remains a bit of a dark horse. Wrapped in thick camo, it doesn’t betray its exterior features easily, and the tech specs remain a mystery. Some say it might be based on the MQB A0 chassis of the latest Polo and T-Cross for Europe, as well as the latest Virtus sedan/saloon for Brazil, but this is by no means official.

If we had to guess, we’d say the car is likely to borrow its engine range from the Polo. In Brazil, the hatchback ships with a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated engine (around 80 hp / 60 kW), its larger 1.6-liter counterpart (115 hp / 85 kW), and a three-cylinder turbo (125 hp / 93 kW). The gear can be five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The drive is on the front axle, no options provided.

Production will launch in Brazil in May 2020, but the first cars will not arrive until the second half of the year. Volkswagen had initially intended to sell the New Urban Coupe only in the developing economies of Asia, Africa, and South America, but later rumors suggested that a release in Europe was also in the plans. If true, the series will mostly likely be produced in Spain and come out in 2021.
