Jost Capito, Head of Volkswagen R GmbH, has shared his view on the future of the VW performance vehicle line. Among other things, he made it clear we won’t be seeing R versions of small-displacement cars.
According to Capito, the Golf R will remain the most compact member of the R family. While many clients show vivid interest in the Polo R, designing it for mass production would be simply too expensive, especially considering how quickly the market saturates and the demand fades. Furthermore, this action would cannibalize the sales of the current-gen Golf R (shown in the video).
He added that performance cars might emerge in other market segments; among other things, the company is actively looking into launching the VW Arteon R series.
