A 28-year-old Volkswagen Polo convertible is available for purchase in Germany with 91,890 km (57,098 miles) under its belt and an asking price of €11,900. Its body style makes it highly exclusive, so let’s delve into the specifics.
Walter Treser, ex-Audi designer and colleague of Ferdinand Piech, came up with this mixture between a convertible and a Targa three decades ago. He headed the preliminary design department at Audi back in the 1970s, ultimately becoming one of the ‘fathers’ of the iconic Audi 100. Legend has it he was also the one who came up with the name ‘quattro’ for the company’s innovative AWD system.
Later on, Treser founded an auto shop in Ingolstadt and proceeded to modify classical Audis. The Volkswagen car currently on sale was his only VW-based conversion ever.
The Polo Treser GT (see video) sports a hardtop and some removable bodywork, so you can turn it into a Targa and a cabriolet as desired. The company only accepted 55- and 75-horsepower versions of the Polo for the conversion, and this one is the 75-hp one.
A total of 290 such vehicles emerged in total, out of which 10 were made by Treser himself and the remaining 280 by a third party. This one belongs to the exclusive group of ten, and has mostly served as a show car throughout its life.
VW Polo has no open-top modifications on today’s market, making this example rather unique.
