Rumor: 3rd-gen VW Tiguan scheduled for 2022

The third generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan will be released in 2022 with numerous design and tech improvements, various automotive media seem to agree.

While not official, it is generally believed that the new Tiguan will sport a coupe-like body with a slanted roof and an aggressive-looking body kit.

The cabin will be styled closely to that of the Europe-sold VW Passat. It will contain a digital dash and an ultra-wide multimedia screen. The trunk volume is expected to stay nearly the same at 470 liters (16.6 cubic feet).

The next-gen SUV will take advantage of the MQB platform and ship with most of the engines of the newest Golf Mk8. This includes plug-in hybrid powertrains rated at 173 hp (129 kW) and 253 hp (189 kW). The R trim version will come packing a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 355 hp (265 kW) at its disposal. The Allspace variant, which is 250 mm (9.76 inches) longer than the regular Tiguan, will also be available.

Finally, rumors say the 3rd-gen VW Tiguan will feature an optional SAE Level 4 self-driving system, which would enable it to go fully autonomous on certain road stretches.
