VW Tiguan R spotted out in the snow

The earliest prototypes of the Volkswagen Tiguan R SUV were spotted at the Nürburgring as far back as 2016. Today, the R showed up again, this time in Sweden.

The main Tiguan line is due an update soon, and Volkswagen still hasn’t announced the R spec for it, so we were anxious to see whether the R is based on the facelifted Tiguan or not. It is! The front end wears some camo, but we have already seen the ‘warmed-up’ R-Line, and this one is going to look completely or nearly identical. There are quad exhaust tips and high-end brakes with blue supports, just like on the recently spotted VW Golf R.

Rumors used to circulate that the earlier prototypes of the Tiguan R packed the turbo-five-cylinder engine of the Audi RS Q3. The production version of the SUV will likely get a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine of the Golf R, coupled with the usual DSG transmission and 4Motion AWD. It will likely produce around 333 hp (248 kW), which will position it slightly above the smaller T-Roc R with its 300 hp (224 kW).
