Volkswagen Tiguan X coupe/SUV debuts on patent pics

China Patent Office has amended its open database with photos of the upcoming Volkswagen Tiguan X, a coupe-shaped crossover SUV continuing in the tracks of Tayron X and Teramont X.

Compared to the standard Tiguan, the X sports a slanted roof and a completely new rear body design. The front end and the side outlines are the same, but the brake lights with a connecting strip are new. As for the rear bumper with its wide reflector and large exhaust tips, this is likely a feature reserved for the R Line spec.

The company has only revealed a few bits of information about the SUV so far, and there is a major surprise waiting for those who thought the X was based on the standard Tiguan chassis. Instead, the car uses the elongated wheelbase of the Tiguan Allspace (EU) and L (China). Whereas the standard wheelbase is 2,677 mm (8.78 feet) long, the extended one spans 2,791 mm (9.16 feet).

The increased rear overhang thus makes the coupe-SUV the longest Tiguan on the market today at 4,764 mm (15.63 feet) total. The Allspace is 4,701 mm (15.42 feet) long, and the standard Tiguan measures 4,486 mm (14.72 feet) head to tail. It is also 1,628 mm (5.34 feet) tall.

In terms of standard and available equipment, the newcomer is unlikely to differ much from its peers. An alleged document leak suggest that it will primarily ship with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood, available in 186 and 220 horsepower versions (139 and 164 kilowatts, respectively).

The Tiguan X will celebrate its premiere in China soon and enter production in the Shanghai Volkswagen factory. It remains open whether it will ever become available in other countries.
