Volkswagen teases Tiguan X coupe/SUV on official pics

SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture has posted new images of the coupe-bodied Tiguan X crossover meant for Chinese market. As expected, the car has a slanted roof and a new rear end with different brake lights, a reflector strip and fake exhaust tips. The front looks identical to the standard Tiguan.

R-Line is the only spec revealed to date. The X comes based on a stretched version of the Tiguan chassis known in Europe as Allspace and in China as L. The wheelbase gets stretched from its standard 2,677 mm to 2,791 mm, while the massive rear overhang makes the Tiguan X the longest car on the lineup at 4,764 mm (Allspace/L: 2,701 mm; normal Tiguan: 4,486 mm). At 1,859 mm wide, it is also 20mm wider.

No interior photos have been published so far, but major changes likely won’t happen there. Overall, we’d expect the X model to ship in a limited number of more expensive trims. For one, digital dashboard will likely be standard in all trims.

The entry-level 1.4-liter engine with 150 hp (112 kW) will not be available, either. Customers will be offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in 186hp / 139kW and 220hp/164kW versions. A seven-speed DSG transmission will be tasked with sending the power to either the front wheels or all four.

The Volkswagen Tiguan X will celebrate its China premiere on Monday, September 7, and go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2020. Availability on other markets remains speculative.
