Volkswagen AG has shed some light on how the Night Vision system on the newest VW Touareg works. Apparently, the innovative solution enables the car to spot and identify objects over 100 meters (330 ft.) ahead in the darkness.
The system consists of an infrared scanner that perceives heat emitted by larger animals and people and submits the data to the driver. If said person or animal are at risk of being run over, a warning pops up for the driver to avoid collision. To that end, VW Night Vision can even predict movement directions.
The infrared sensor system steps in automatically at speeds exceeding 50 km/h (30 mph), simultaneously with the emergency brake. It can be improved further by installing matrix LED headlights that will then illuminate people dangerously close to the vehicle.
