The final ICE cars to come from the Volkswagen brand will be the Passat, the Tiguan, the T-Roc and the Tayron for China, Automobilwoche reports quoting company CEO Thomas Schaefer. There are no plans for a gas-powered Golf Mk9, but things might change depending on the situation.
The next-gen Passat is scheduled to debut later this year, but solely as an estate/wagon with no other options. The new Tiguan – which we’ve already seen tested on the streets – will also arrive sometime before the end of 2023. The T-Roc should get its update a couple of years from now, and that will be as far as VW ICE cars will go in Europe, Schaefer says.
In addition to that, the manufacturer may want to update its current lineup. For example, a Golf facelift is scheduled for introduction in 2024. It will continue to be produced until the end of the decade, after which the company hopes to replace it with an EV based on a new architecture it has yet to design. Schaefer did admit that, should the market situation change drastically in 2026–2027, the company would probably consider a ninth-generation Golf release on ICE power.
The Polo hatchback is as good as gone, because the tightening environmental standards make the production of such compact cars not viable. More importantly, the company plans to offer an all-electric replacement based on the ID.2all Concept shown here at basically the same price point.
