No new VW costs as much as this 35-year-old camper in the USA

The world sure has changed over the past couple of years. Among other things, traveling the country behind the steering wheel of a mobile home has grown more popular than ever. But does it make this Volkswagen Type 2/Vanagon RV on sale in Idaho worth the near-$50,000 asking price?

In case you were wondering, the most you can spend on a new VW vehicle in the States is around $44,000 if you go for the latest Golf R. The seller of the camper claims it has multiple unique features to justify the sticker, though.

One of these is the complete original Westfalia RV setup that includes a fully stocked kitchen (fridge, stove, sink etc.) and a pop top for extra sleeping space. Another one is Syncro 4WD, an expensive custom chassis that enables the van to climb mountain trails and generally feel at home in moderate off-road conditions.

Powering the 1987MY vehicle is a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 2.1-liter four-pot. An old-fashioned four-speed M/T carries the torque to both axles with a single crawler ratio and a couple of diff locks available for challenging terrain.

Still, there is no avoiding the fact that fifty thousand grand buys you a much more spacious and capable RV than this. Then again, perhaps someone will be swayed by the unique feature set offered by this particular van, which appears to be in great condition despite the age.
